If you reach at the top and have no one to share, then you are not there
The final-year students of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) will visit Ladakh this year to get a first-hand experience of one of country’s most difficult terrains and understand the place from the perspective of people living there, cutting themselves completely off from the outside world for at least five days.
The visit is part of an elective course called Sodh Yatra, which is one of the most popular electives among the students, accommodating only 30 students for which hundreds of students vie. Following the visit, the students submit reports based on their observations and earn grade based on the sensitivity and articulateness with which they describe their observations.
“IIM-A prepare students for corporate job. But at the same time, we believe they need to come face to face with country’s ground reality. The course hones the students’ ability to learn from those from whom we do not expect to learn much,’’ said the course co-ordinator and IIM-A senior faculty Prof Anil Gupta. Earlier, students have visited places like Sikkim, Lahaul-Spiti in Himachal Pradesh (HP) and Ladakh.
“Students earn grades based on how well they present their observations in the reports prepared after the visit. In one of the reports, a student mentioned the story of a young, athletic-looking man in a god-forsaken land who could walk much faster on the hilly terrain than most of the students. He reached on top much early, but had a very insightful comment to make ‘If you reach at the top and have no one to share, then you are not there!’ When one gains such insights after undergoing such experience, it remains forever etched in your psyche, guiding you through difficult times. This is exactly what the course tries to achieve,’’ Prof Gupta said.
